Quick answer

Spotify Connect lets one Spotify app act as a remote for playback on another compatible device signed into or available to the same account/network. Open the device picker from Now Playing, then select the speaker, TV, console or computer you want.

How Spotify Connect works

The controlling phone or computer sends playback instructions while the selected device streams the audio. This is different from Bluetooth, where the phone normally sends the audio signal.

Available devices appear in the device picker, subject to account, network and product compatibility.

Connect to another device

Keep both devices online and update their Spotify apps or firmware where possible.

  1. Start Spotify on the playback device.
  2. Open Spotify on the controller and play something.
  3. Open the Connect device picker.
  4. Choose the intended device and confirm audio begins there.

When a device does not appear

Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network for setup, restart the apps and devices, and disable guest-network isolation or VPNs that block local discovery.

Some devices require linking Spotify through their own companion app. Spotify Connect support can also depend on the device manufacturer.

Remove devices you do not recognise

Use Sign out everywhere and change the Spotify password if an unknown device keeps controlling playback. Also remove access for unfamiliar third-party apps from the account page.

Shared speakers can remain discoverable on a local network, so a visible device is not always evidence that someone has your password.

Common questions

Is Spotify Connect the same as Bluetooth?

No. Connect normally has the playback device stream directly, while Bluetooth sends audio from the source device.

Do both devices need the same Wi-Fi?

Often for discovery and setup; some linked-device experiences can work differently after setup.

Why does playback move by itself?

Another signed-in controller, shared device or compromised account may be controlling it. Review devices and account security.
