Quick answer
Individual is built for one listener. Family can support up to six eligible family members living together, with separate accounts. Family can cost less per person, but only when the household rules genuinely fit.
The biggest difference is eligibility
Individual has no household-member requirement because it covers one account. Premium Family is specifically for eligible family members who live together.
Spotify requires the plan manager and members to use the same home address and may request address verification.
Family still gives everyone separate accounts
Joining Family does not merge everyone's libraries. Members sign in separately and keep their own playlists, saved music and recommendations.
The plan manager pays for the plan and can manage membership and certain parental-control features, but members do not all listen through one shared login.
When Family can be better value
The effective per-person cost falls as more eligible household members use the plan. The splitter above shows this clearly for the market you select.
Do not treat an empty plan slot as permission to add someone outside the household. Price comparisons only make sense after eligibility is satisfied.
What happens when switching
Spotify says you keep playlists, saved music and settings when changing Premium plans. Billing timing can change depending on the direction of the switch.
If a Family manager moves to a smaller plan, members who are not kept on Premium can move to Spotify Free at the applicable date.
Common questions
Can Family members listen at the same time?

Do Family members need to live together?
Yes. Spotify's published Family rules require members to live with the plan manager.
Can I switch without losing playlists?
Spotify says playlists, saved music and settings remain when changing Premium plans.
